'Dark Knight' Director Christopher Nolan Lives Off the Grid

In this day and age, we don't know how a ten-year-old manages to live off the grid, much less an A-list Hollywood moviemaker.

But off the grid Christopher Nolan lives, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The director of such commercially and critically acclaimed (and tech-heavy!) films as "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Inception" apparently doesn't own a cell phone.

"It's not that I'm a Luddite and don't like technology; I've just never been interested," Nolan said. "When I moved to L.A. in 1997, nobody really had cell phones, and I just never went down that path."

How can you not go down that path, especially when you usually command a crew of, like, hundreds of people? Never mind that, though — Nolan doesn't even have an email address, either. Warner Bros. set one up for him and he didn't realize it until a couple of year later.

"There were thousands of emails in this account — some from quite important people, actually," he said. "I had them take it down, so people didn't think they were getting in touch with me."

Despite the fact that technology is a huge part of many of his movies — especially the "Dark Knight" trilogy — Nolan himself has little use for the devices that most of us now take for granted.

"A lot of the things people amuse themselves with really are just toys for grown-ups, and it eats your time and pulls your concentration," he said. "The idea that you're holding in your hand a device that will actually let you speak to another human being and instead of using it for that, you type some silly little message and send a one-way communication — it's a very odd step backwards in communication terms."

Well, yeah. But texting is fun!

Anyway, the fact that he's so unplugged actually makes Christopher Nolan even cooler. It's all just part of his "thing," along with the sweater vests and overcoats and the mug of tea he always keeps in his pocket, even if it's 100 degrees out.

Keep all of this in mind as you watch "The Dark Knight Rises" this weekend. Whenever it looked like a shooting day was going to go late, Nolan had to borrow Christian Bale's phone to call his wife and tell her to leave dinner in the oven.
